Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Timing Chain: Service and Repair

Fig. 6 Valve Timing Marks:

1. Remove engine front cover as outlined under ENGINE FRONT COVER.
2. Temporarily install balancer bolt and washer in end of crankshaft. Turn crankshaft so timing marks on sprockets are as close together as possible. Remove balancer bolt and washer using a sharp blow on wrench handle, so bolt can be removed without changing position of sprockets.
3. Remove timing chain dampener, then and camshaft sprocket bolts.
4. Using two large screwdrivers, alternately pry off sprockets and chain.
5. Reverse procedure to install. Assemble timing chain on sprockets and slide sprockets and chain assembly onto camshaft and crankshaft with timing marks aligned as shown in Fig. 6.
6. Torque all bolts and nuts to specifications.
