Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Engine Control Module: Testing and Inspection

FUNCTIONAL CHECK
1. Turn ignition "ON," engine "RUNNING."
2. Using a Tech 1 scan tool, command the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) "ON," then "OFF."

A. MIL should turn "ON" and "OFF" when commanded. This indicates the Erasable Programable Read Only Memory (EPROM) is installed properly and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) is functioning.
B. If Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 19, 43, or 51 occur, or if the MIL (Service Engine Soon) is "ON" constantly with no DTC's, the EPROM is not fully seated or is defective.
^ If not fully seated, press firmly on the ends of the EPROM.
^ If it is necessary to remove the EPROM, follow removal instructions.
