Cruise Control Switch: Description and Operation

Mode Control Switch (Typical):

DESCRIPTION
The mode control switches are on the turn signal lever. The "OFF / ON-R/A" switch controls the "ON/OFF," "RESUME" speed and "ACCELERATE" modes. The "SET/COAST" switch controls the cruise speed and coast modes.

OFF
The cruise control system is turned "OFF" when the switch is set to "OFF."

ON
This position turns "ON" the system.

R/A - (Resume/Accelerate)
This is a spring-loaded, normally open switch. The "R/A" switch may not be used to set the initial cruise set speed, but if the system had been de-activated by braking the vehicle, sliding the switch momentarily to "R/A" causes the vehicle to accelerate, or "resume," to the previously set cruise speed. If the switch is held at "R/A" for more than 0.75 second, the vehicle will accelerate until the switch is released. When it is released, the speed at that time becomes the new cruise speed. Also, by quickly sliding the switch to "R/A" and releasing it, the set speed can be "tapped up" (increased) in 1.6 kph (1 mph) increments.

SET
This is a spring-loaded, normally open switch. With "OFF / ON-R/A" set to "ON," and with the vehicle moving faster than 40 kph (25 mph), pressing the "SET/COAST" switch sets the cruise speed. After a speed has been set, if "SET/COAST" is pressed and held, the vehicle will decelerate until the switch is released. When it is released, that speed becomes the new cruise speed if greater than 40 kph (25 mph).

Also, by quickly pressing and releasing the switch, the set speed can be "tapped down" (decreased) in 1.6 kph (1 mph) increments. The set speed will clear from the PCM's memory if the vehicle is placed into "PARK."
