Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Upon removal of starter, note if any shims are used. If shims are used, they should be installed in their original locations. After installation, if starter is noisy during cranking, remove one 0.015 inch double shim or add one 0.015 inch single shim to the outer bolt. If starter makes a high pitched whine after firing, add 0.015 inch double shims until noise ceases.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support front of vehicle.
3. Raise vehicle half way to gain access to starter.
4. Remove any shields or braces blocking access to starter.
5. Remove skid plate, if equipped.
6. Remove bolts and brackets holding brake line to crossmember.
7. Remove crossmember.
8. Remove starter mounting bolts, then allow starter to drop down.
9. Remove solenoid wiring and battery cable, then the starter assembly.
10. Reverse procedure to install.
