Driver Information Center (DIC) Displays Inaccurate Fuel Economy and Fuel Used (Flash with New Calibration)
Model:
1996 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight with 3800 Engine
(VIN K - RPO L36)
Condition
Some owners may comment that the Driver Information Center (DIC) is inaccurate when displaying "Average Fuel Economy" and "Fuel Used". The display may be as much as 25% inaccurate.
Cause
The calculations for "Average Fuel Economy" and "Fuel Used" may be inaccurate.
Correction
Flash with updated Powertrain Control Module (PCM) calibration.
The new calibrations will be available for Techline Tools starting with the May, 1997 Disc 10 release from GM Service Technology Group (STG). DO NOT attempt to order the calibration numbers from GMSPO. The calibrations are programmed into the vehicle's PCM via a Techline Tool device.
To obtain access to the calibration, call the Techline Customer Support Center (TCSC) at:
English - 1-800-828-6860
French - 1-800-503-3222
Inform the TCSC specialist that you are repairing a DIC concern and mention this Corporate Bulletin Number. The TCSC specialist will need the vehicle identification number (VIN) and the new calibration number as listed below. The TCSC will provide you with a Vehicle Configuration Index (VCI) number. The VCI number will allow the PCM to be flashed with the new calibration. Once you have obtained the VCI number from TCSC, enter the Service Programming System (SPS) on the Techline terminal and select SPECIAL and then PROGRAM BY VCI. The correct calibration part number will be listed on the SPS summary screen. Continue with the programming process by selecting PROGRAM.
