Starter Motor: Service and Repair

STARTER MOTOR REPLACEMENT

REMOVAL PROCEDURE

IMPORTANT: The starter motor is not serviceable and must be replaced as a complete unit.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the front lower air deflector.
4. Remove the S terminal nut (1) from the starter solenoid.
5. Remove the S terminal wiring harness connector from the starter solenoid.
6. Remove the BAT terminal nut (4) from the starter solenoid.
7. Remove the BAT terminal wiring harness connector (3) from the starter solenoid.
8. Remove the torque converter cover.




9. Remove the starter motor bolts (1).
10. Remove the starter motor (2).

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Install the starter motor (2).

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

2. Install the starter motor bolts (1).

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

3. Install the torque converter cover.




4. Install the BAT terminal wiring harness connector (3) to the starter solenoid BAT terminal.
5. Install the BAT terminal nut (4).

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 10 N.m (89 lb in).

6. Install the S terminal wiring harness connector (2) to the starter solenoid S terminal.
7. Install the S terminal nut (1).

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 2 N.m (20 lb in).

8. Install the front lower air deflector.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Connect the negative battery cable.
