Ignition System: Service Precautions

PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE DOING ANY WORK ON THE ELECTRONIC IGNITION SYSTEM.

BATTERY
Check the condition of charge.
Check the connections.

HIGH TENSION HARNESS
Check the connections at:
The coil,
The distributor cap,
The spark plugs.

LOW VOLTAGE HARNESS
Check the connections from:
The coil to the amplifier module,
The coil to the distributor.

DISTRIBUTOR CAP
Check for condition of the contacts, for cracks, and for burns.

ADDITIONAL PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN BEFORE WORKING ON THE VEHICLE.

Do not use any outside equipment which could cause voltage surges during starting (battery charger, booster battery, etc.). Either recharge the battery, or use a replacement battery.
When arc-welding, disconnect the battery, the alternator and the amplifier module.
Use only a high tension tachometer.
