THIS BULLETIN SUPERCEDES BULLETIN NO. 183 DATED JUNE, 1986. BOTH ELRING (BROWN) AND CURTY (GREEN) HEAD GASKETS WILL BE SUPPLIED BY PMA PARTS DEPARTMENT
SUBJECT: 1986 XN6 GASOLINE FUEL INJECTION ENGINE MODIFICATIONS AND REVISED CYLINDER HEAD TORQUE AND RETORQUE PROCEDURES.
This Service Bulletin will briefly recap the modifications introduced on the 1986 XN6 engine. A portion of this information has been published in the Technical Training Introduction Course, Model Year Change Service Bulletin and Engine Workshop Manual.
1) ENGINE MODIFICATIONS:
New reinforced cylinder block including:
- Two stiffener ribs on exhaust side.
- Deeper head bolt wells.
- Additional material surrounding bolt holes.
New reinforced cylinder head including:
- Reinforcement around bolt passages.
- Longer head bolts; length 181 mm, thread M11 x 150.
- Bolt size 16 mm across flats.
- New headgasket suppliers.
IMPORTANT: CYLINDER HEAD BOLT RETORQUING IS NOT REQUIRED AT P.D.I. OR AT 1000/1500 MILE SERVICE.
The above mentioned engine modifications have made it possible to increase the cylinder head bolt angle torque from 90~ to 180~ + 35~ after cooling down period.
For repair purposes, the new bolts can be reutilized up to 5 times after their initial installation at the factory. The torquing and retorquing procedure indicated on page 2 must be closely followed whenever a new head gasket is installed during repairs.
2) REVISED CYLINDER HEAD AND RETORQUE PROCEDURES ON 1986 XN6 ENGINES ONLY.
NOTE: This gasket can be used for replacement on Pre 1986 model year engines. However the cylinder head must be torqued and retorqued according to the applicable model year procedure. Refer to cylinder head tightening chart (NTD/QA/110.2). Install head gasket with inscription "DESSUS" facing up (cylinder head side). Also note that on the "ELRING" gaskets the metal adjoining inserts face the cylinder head side.
Prior to installing a new headgasket, check liners protrusion:
- Minimum acceptable protrusion above block is: 0.06 mm
- Difference in protrusion between two adjoining sleeves:
0.04 mm maximum
- If these values are not obtained, replace the liner seals to obtain a liner protrusion at the highest point between 0.07 to 0.14 mm, preferably as near as possible to 0.10 mm.
1986 CYLINDER HEAD BOLT TIGHTENING SEQUENCE
A) Observing the tightening sequence pretorque to 5mdaN (36.25 ft.lbs.)
B) Torque rocker arm shaft nut to 1.5mdaN (10.88 ft.lbs.)
C) Observing the tightening sequence loosen one bolt at a time completely and retighten to 2mdaN (14.50 Ft.Lbs.) then turn the bolt an additional 180~ using the notches on the socket P/N 91.51 as a reference.
D) Repeat procedure "C" for each bolt.
E) Adjust the valves, Intake: 0.10 mm (0.004")
Exhaust: 0.25 mm (0.010")
After bringing engine to operating temperature (approx: 15 minutes) followed by a 6 hour cooling down period, retorque the cylinder head as follows:
- Using socket P/N 91.51 and following the torque sequence, torque each bolt an additional 35~ without prior loosening.
- Adjust the valves. (Same as above)
NO FURTHER RETORQUE IS REQUIRED
