Crankshaft: Service and Repair

Refer to Fig. 26 and remove parts in numerical order as shown. Identify main bearings so they can be reinstalled with same bearing cap. Reverse procedure to install, observing following procedures:

1. Bearings can be identified in following manner. Bearings for cylinder block side will have grooves running through the center on all bearings except No. 3 bearing. No. 3 bearing has no groove, Fig. 27. Bearings used on bearing cap side have no grooves.
2. Arrows on bearing caps should point toward front of engine when installed.
3. Torque cap bolts in two or three stages to 55-61 ft. lbs. Caps should be torqued starting at No. 3 cap and proceeding to No. 2, No. 4, No. 1 and No. 5. Check for free rotation of crankshaft after bearing caps have been torqued.
4. Install new crankshaft rear oil seal using tool No. MD998376.
