Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Timing Belt: Adjustments

Fig. 9 Positioning crankshaft for torquing of tensioner mounting bolts:

CAMSHAFT TIMING BELT

1. Remove timing belt upper cover. Turn crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at top dead center on compression stroke and timing marks on all sprockets are aligned.
2. Loosen timing belt tensioner mounting bolts and allow tensioner to be pushed by tensioner spring into automatic tensioning of timing belt.
3. Rotate crankshaft until two teeth of camshaft sprocket pass timing mark and hold in this position, Fig. 9, then torque tensioner mounting bolts. Torque upper side bolt first, then torque lower side bolt.
4. Turn crankshaft in counterclockwise direction until all sprocket timing marks are in alignment. Check belt deflection halfway between camshaft sprocket and injection pump sprocket. Deflection should be 0.16 - 0.20 inch.

Fig. 10 Access cover removal hole & front cover guide lines:

SILENT SHAFT DRIVE BELT

1. Turn crankshaft until No. 1 cylinder is at top dead center on compression stroke.
2. Pry up on access cover with screwdriver at position shown in Fig. 10 and remove cover.
3. Loosen tensioner B mounting bolts and allow tensioner to properly tension belt B.
4. Torque tensioner B mounting bolts. Torque lower bolt to 16-21 ft. lbs. and upper bolt to 15-19 ft. lbs. Torque lower nut before torquing upper nut.
5. Install front access cover. Slide cover down along two embossed lines of front lower cover, Fig. 10.
