Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove the battery and battery tray.
2. On turbocharged models, remove air cleaner case, then the actuator mounting bolts, actuator to shaft coupling pin and the actuator. Do not reuse actuator collar.
3. On models equipped with 5 speed, disconnect select control valve connector.
4. Remove speedometer and clutch release cables.
5. Disconnect back-up light switch and starter wiring.
6. Remove top engine to transaxle attaching bolts, then the starter motor.
7. Raise and support vehicle, then remove under cover.
8. Drain transaxle oil into suitable container.
9. Disconnect shift linkage and extension rod.
10. Disconnect stabilizer bar from lower control arms.
11. Remove right and left side drive shafts. Refer to "Front Suspension and Steering" for procedure.
12. Support lower part of transaxle with suitable jack. Support a wide area of transaxle so oil pan is not partially supported.
13. Remove bellhousing cover, then remaining engine to transmission attaching bolts.
14. Remove transaxle mount insulator bolt, then blind cover from inside right fender shield.
15. Remove transaxle bracket assembly, then the transaxle mount bracket.
16. Remove transaxle from vehicle.
17. Reverse procedure to install. Refer to torque specifications.
