Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Barometric Pressure Sensor: Testing and Inspection

Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor/Barometric Read Solenoid:

1. Unplug the solenoid electrical connector and disconnect the vacuum lines from the solenoid.

NOTE: Try to locate the source vacuum hose and connect the vacuum pump to that port. The vacuum gauge can be connected to either of the other vacuum ports.

2. Connect a vacuum pump to one of the vacuum ports on the solenoid.
3. Connect a vacuum gauge to a second vacuum port.
4. Apply battery voltage to one terminal of the EGR solenoid and ground the other terminal. If the solenoid DOES NOT click, replace the solenoid.
5. Using the vacuum pump, apply 15 inches of vacuum to the solenoid. If vacuum is read while the solenoid is ENERGIZED, allow the vacuum in the hose to vent (by disconnecting the pump and gauge), disconnect the ground jumper wire, re-apply vacuum with the vacuum pump, and verify that vacuum can no longer be read at the gauge. If vacuum is not sensed while the solenoid is ENERGIZED, allow the vacuum in the hose to vent (by disconnecting the pump and gauge), disconnect the ground jumper wire and verify that vacuum can be read at the gauge.
6. If the solenoid does not operate as outlined above, replace the solenoid.
