Ignition-Off Draw Test

BATTERY IGNITION OFF DRAW (IOD) TESTS
High battery current draw, greater than 30 milliamps, with the ignition switch in the OFF position will discharge a battery. After a vehicle that has experienced a dead battery has been serviced, the vehicle Ignition Off Draw (IOD) should be checked. To determine if a high current draw condition exists, check the vehicle with a digital multimeter on the milliampere scale.

1. Cycle the ignition switch ON to OFF position and remove the ignition key. Ensure that both doors are closed. Disable the hood ajar switch.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Using a multimeter with a 10 amp range place the meter in4ine between the battery ground terminal and the ground cable.
4. Test current draw; if GREATER THAN 0.6 amps (600 milliamps) after one minute, go to Step a. If less than 0.6 amps (600 milliamps), go to Step 5.
a. Ensure all lamps are OFF.
b. Pull and install each fuse in the PDC one at a time and check for the current draw to drop below 30 milliamps. If no current draw drop, go to Step c. If current draw drops, repair circuit as necessary. Refer to Wiring Diagrams for circuit information.
c. Remove all fuses from the PDC. If no current draw drop occurs, disconnect the generator B+ wire. If current draw drops, replace the generator. If no current draw drop, check wiring and repair as necessary.

5. Test current draw; if LESS THAN 0.6 amps (600 milliamps) after one minute:
a. Pull the Transmission Control Module fuse from the PDC. Refer to Wiring Diagrams.
b. Set multimeter to the milliamp scale and check for a reading less than 30 milliamps. If more than 30 milliamps, go to Step c. If less than 30 milliamps, go to Step 6.
c. Pull and install each fuse in the PDC one at a time and check for the current draw to drop below 30 milliamps. If no current draw drop, go to Step d. If current draw drops, repair circuit as necessary. Refer to Wiring Diagrams for circuit information.

CAUTION: Do not open the vehicle door with the milliamp meter connected

d. Remove all fuses from the PDC. If no current draw drop disconnect the generator B+ wire and if current draw drops replace the generator. If current draw drop check wiring and repair as necessary. repair circuit as necessary. Refer to Wiring Diagrams for circuit information.

6. Verify the current draw.
a. Disconnect multimeter.
b. Connect the battery ground cable to battery terminal or use a jumper wire.
c. Install the Transmission Control Module fuse in to the PDC.
d. Cycle the ignition switch ON to OFF position and remove the ignition key. Ensure that both doors are closed.
e. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

Milliampere Meter Connection:




f. Using a multimeter with a 10 amp range place the meter in-line between the battery ground terminal and the ground cable.
g. The Transmission Control Module has a 20 minute time out and will have a higher current draw for approximately 20 minutes.
h. After the time out the multimeter should read less than 30 milliamps. If the reading is higher than 30 milliamps, test Transmission Control Module and circuit. If the reading is less than 30 milliamps, the system is OK.
