Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Control Arm: Service and Repair

Replace control arms one at a time to prevent axle misalignment, making installation difficult.

UPPER CONTROL ARMS

Firebird models use a single torque arm in place of upper control arms. Refer to ``Torque Arm, Replace'' and Fig. 3.
1. Support vehicle at frame and rear axle.
2. Remove control arm front and rear mounting bolts. On some vehicles, disconnect the shock absorber lower mounting stud to provide clearance. Also, use a suitable jack under the nose of differential housing to aid bolt removal.
3. Reverse procedure to install. Tighten control arm bolts with vehicle at curb height.

LOWER CONTROL ARMS
Follow ``Upper Control Arms'' procedure for replacement of lower control arms. On models equipped with a stabilizer bar, remove stabilizer bar outlined under ``Stabilizer Bar & Bushings, Replace'' procedure before removing lower control arm mounting bolts.
