Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Brake Shoe Installation

1. Position retaining spring on inboard shoe, place single leg in brake shoe hole, then snap two other legs over notch in shoe. Some inboard replacement brake pads incorporate wear sensors and have a specific left and righthand assembly. Properly installed, the wear sensor will face toward the rear of caliper.

3. Position caliper over rotor, align mounting holes, install and torque bolts to 70 ft. lbs., (95 Nm).
4. Using suitable pliers clinch outboard shoe to caliper, place lower jaw of pliers on bottom edge of shoe, place upper jaw of pliers on shoe tab, squeeze pliers and bend tab. Clinch other end of shoe in same manner. Outboard end play should be zero to .005 inch., (zero to 0.127 mm).
5. Install wheel and tire assembly and lower vehicle.
6. Add brake fluid to within 1/4 inch from top of master cylinder. Pump brake pedal several times to ensure it is firm before moving vehicle.
