Oil Pump Cover Assembly

1. Check pump cover for restricted oil passages.

2. Check four pump cover cup plugs. If a plug is missing, use a hammer and a 9/32 inch (7.14 mm) diameter rod on the two smaller plugs, a 5/16 inch (7.97 mm) diameter rod on the line to transmission case cup plug and a 7/16 inch (11.11 mm) diameter rod on the large plug and drive cup plugs 1/32 inch (0.79 mm) below top of cup bore. Stake top of cup bore at two locations to retain cup plug.

3. Install pump cover retaining bolts onto pump body. Do not tighten bolts.

4. Using tool No. J25015 or equivalent, align pump cover and pump body by positioning a screwdriver through pump to transmission case bolt hole.

5. Torque pump cover bolts to 18 ft lbs (24 Nm) and remove tool No. J25015 from pump.

6. Install pump O-ring seal into transmission case with chamfered side facing outward. Ensure O-ring seal is not twisted.

7. Install stator shaft flange to overrun clutch selective thrust washer.

8. Remove screwdriver from pump to transmission case bolt hole.

9. Lubricate and install new gasket onto pump.

10. Install two guide pins through pump and into transmission case.

11. Install pump assembly, washers and bolts. Remove guide pins and install washers and bolts. Install all bolts except for one, which will be used to check overdrive unit endplay.

12. Torque pump to transmission case bolts to 18 ft lbs. (24 Nm). Ensure turbine shaft rotates freely.

13. Refer to overdrive unit endplay chart, and check endplay as follows:

a. Install an 11 inch (278 mm) bolt and locking through pump and into transmission case. Using tool No. J25022 or equivalent, install onto tool No. J24773-5 or equivalent and sition onto end of turbine shaft, positioning dial indicator point cap nut onto top surface of tool No. J24773-5.

b. Apply and maintain approximately a 3 lb. force in an upward direction to tool No. J24773-5 and set dial indicator to zero. Performing procedure step b, will eliminate the tolerance difference between turbine shaft snap ring and overdrive carrier.

c. Increase force to approximately 20 lbs. and read dial indicator. Overdrive unit endplay should be 0.004-0.027 inch (0.10-.0-81 mm). Selective thrust washer controlling endplay limit is located between pump cover and overrun clutch housing. if it is necessary to increase or decrease washer thickness, refer to chart, and select correct washer to be used.

14. Remove overdrive unit endplay tools and install remaining pump to transmission case bolt torque bolt to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).

15. Remove tools from rear end of transmission and position transmission horizontally.
