Timing Belt Tensioner: Adjustments

1. Remove fan, drive belt, pulley and upper timing belt cover.
2. Rotate crankshaft at least one revolution and position No. 1 piston at top dead center.
3. Install belt tension gauge, Tool J-26486, Fig. 4, on timing belt midway between the cam sprocket and idler pulley. Ensure the gauge center finger engages in a notch on the belt.
4. Correct belt tension is 70 ft. lbs. To adjust, loosen idler pulley attaching bolt, Fig. 5. Then, using a 1/4 inch Allen wrench, rotate the pulley counterclockwise on the attaching bolt until correct belt tension is obtained and torque attaching bolt to 13---18 ft. lbs. (18---24 Nm).
5. Remove gauge and install upper timing belt cover, pulley, drive belt and fan.
