Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Disassemble

1. Remove oil filler tube, oil pan, manual detent roller and spring and strainer. Disconnect governor pressure switch and solenoid electrical connectors, then remove pressure switch, converter clutch solenoid and solenoid pipes, if applicable.

2. Remove transfer plate reinforcement and servo cover.

3. Remove valve body, transfer plate and gasket. Be careful not to damage or lose manual valve and manual valve link during removal of valve body.

4. Remove the two check balls from transmission case and note location for reassembly, see image.

5. Using tool J-23075, compress servo piston and remove snap ring, see image. Loosen tool slowly to relieve servo spring tension. Remove burr from O.D. of piston bore, if necessary, to prevent damage to snap ring during installation.

6. Remove inner lever locknut from selector lever shaft and the inner lever.

7. Remove selector lever shaft spring pin, then the shaft and seal.

8. Remove vacuum modulator, plunger, valve and sleeve from case.

9. Pull out spring pin and push on spring seat of detent valve from front of case and remove detent valve, sleeve, spring, and spring seat from rear of case.

10. Remove speedometer driven gear assembly, then the extension housing. Note position of parking pawl in extension housing.

11. Remove parking pawl actuator lever and actuator rod from extension housing.

12. Depress speedometer drive gear retaining clip and slide gear off output shaft. Remove governor retaining bolts and slide governor off shaft. Remove governor hub snap ring and slide hub off shaft.

13. Remove the outer seven converter housing attaching bolts. Loosen, but do not remove, the inner five oil pump bolts, see image.

14. Remove the converter housing together with oil pump, reverse clutch and second clutch assemblies, see first image. Do not lose selective thrust washer, located between oil pump and second clutch drum, see second image. If the second clutch assembly remains in case, remove assembly with the reverse clutch plates. Observe the position of square-cut oil seal. Be sure to install new seal in the same position during assembly.

15. Remove reverse clutch plates and aluminum pressure plate from case.

16. Remove third clutch with input shaft Remove planetary carrier and output shaft by sliding through front of case. Do not lose the two needle bearings and one thrust washer from planetary carrier.

17. Remove sun gear and drum from case, then remove needle bearing from rear of case.

18. Slightly compress low band and remove from case.
