Dealer Campaign, Parts & Service Procedure Information

DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.



PARTS INFORMATION

Parts required to complete this campaign are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operation (GMSPO). To ensure that these parts are obtained as soon as possible, they should be ordered on a C.I.O. order with no special instruction code, but on advise code (2).

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Reference Figure 1.

1. Shift vehicle into "PARK", place ignition key in "LOCK" position, set parking brake and disconnect negative battery cable.

2. Remove shifter handle and console cover.

3. Disconnect wire harness.

4. Disconnect park-lock cable from shifter bracket and pin.

5. Remove shifter assembly floor pan bolts (4).

6. Raise vehicle on hoist.

7. Disconnect vertical shift link from horizontal link by removing clip and washer.
SERVICE PROCEDURE

8. Lower vehicle and remove shifter from floor pan.

9. Transfer neutral start switch from removed control assembly to new assembly. When removing switch from old assembly have shift lever in "Neutral" notch of the detent plate. Install switch on new assembly using following steps:

A. Position transmission shifter assembly in "Neutral" notch of detent plate.

B. Align hole in contact carrier with hole in switch housing and insert 2.35 mm diameter gauge pin to a depth of approximately 15.0 mm.

C. Mount switch over studs on detent plate with tang on shifter assembly installed into slot of switch. Tighten nuts to 1.6 - 2.2 N-m (1.2 - 1.6 lb. ft.) and remove gauge pin.

10. Transfer indicator needle and housing from removed assembly to new assembly. Torque nut 1.6 - 2.6 N-m (1.2 - 2.0 lb. ft.) and torque screws to 2.2 - 3.0 N-m (1.6 - 2.2 lb. ft.).

11. Transfer J-nuts from removed assembly to new assembly.

12. Locate new shifter control assembly (with shift lever in "PARK" notch of detent plate) through floor pan and install floor pan bolts. Torque bolts 8 - 12 N-m (6 - 9 lb. ft.).

13. Raise vehicle on hoist.

14. Reconnect and adjust shift linkage as follows:

A. Place shift lever in "PARK" position.

B. Place transmission range selector in "PARK" position.

C. Adjust length of transmission horizontal rod (using horizontal link) until hole is aligned with pin on vertical link.

D. Slide horizontal rod onto vertical link pin (lubricate) and reattach using clip and washer.

NOTICE: Transmission lever "PARK" detent is obtained by rotating transmission lever clockwise to maximum detent position.

15. Lower vehicle on hoist.
SERVICE PROCEDURE

16. Reconnect and adjust park-lock cable as follows:

A. Turn ignition key to "LOCK" position.

B. Place shift lever in "PARK" position.

C. Raise snap cable connector lock button to up position.

D. Snap cable connector to shifter bracket.

E. Snap cable to park-lock lever pin.

F. Push cable connector nose forward toward connector to remove slack.

G. With no load applied to cable connector nose, snap cable connector lock button down.

H. Check operation of park-lock system.

(a) If key can be removed in "NEUTRAL" position, place shift lever in "PARK" raise snap connector lock button to up position and repeat steps F & G.

(b) If key cannot be removed in "PARK" position, raise snap connector lock button to up position and move cable connector nose rearward until key can be removed from ignition. Then snap connector lock button down.

17. Reconnect wire harness and battery.

18. Check neutral start switch for proper operation and readjust if necessary.

19. Install console cover and shifter handle.

NOTICE: 1983 model year vehicles will require a new handle and retainer; see Parts Information.

20. Recheck shift and park-lock linkage for proper operation.

21. Install Campaign Identification Label.
