Differential & Ring Gear






DISASSEMBLY

Refer to accompanying image for disassembled view of differential and ring gear assembly.

Tools J-2241-11 or J-23598, J-22888 and J-22888-35 are required to conduct the following procedure.

1. Remove attaching bolts (77).

2. Remove ring gear (70).

3. Remove bearings (75 and 60) using tools J-22888, J-22888-35 and J-2241-11 or J-23598.

4. Remove speedometer gear (71 or 72).

CAUTION: Removal of (71) will destroy gear.

5. Remove attaching bolt (68) and washer (69).

6. Remove pin (63).

7. Remove gears (67) and washer (64), gears (66) and washer (65).

INSPECTION

Inspect all components for excessive wear and/or damage. Replace worn or damaged components as required.

ASSEMBLY

In addition to a hydraulic press, tool J-22919 is required to conduct the following procedure. Also, heat the mechanical nylon speedometer drive gear (71) in hot tap water for approximately 5 minutes prior to installation. Heat the electronic steel speedometer drive gear in a suitable oven at 250°F. for approximately 7-10 minutes prior to installation. Do not reuse ring gear attaching bolts (77). Use new attaching bolts upon assembly.

1. Allow gears to cool, then install speedometer gear (71 or 72).

2. Install bearings (60 and 75) using tool J-22919 and press.

3. Install gears (66) and washers (65), gears (67) and washers (64).

4. Install pin (63).

5. Install screw (68) and washer (69). Torque attaching screw to 84 inch lbs.

6. Install ring gear (70) with ID chamfer facing carrier assembly.

7. Install new attaching bolts (77). Torque attaching bolts to 61 ft lbs.
