GM-Isuzu 5 Speed Manual Transaxle
1. Remove clutch release bearing, then attach transaxle assembly to holding fixture tool No. J-33366, or equivalent.
2. Remove seven rear cover bolts, then the rear cover.
3. Remove four control box bolts, then the control box assembly.
4. Using screwdriver, shift transaxle into gear. Remove fifth speed drive and driven gear retaining nuts from input and output shafts.
5. Shift transaxle back to Neutral position, aligning shift rail detents.
6. Remove 1-2, 3-4, reverse and fifth speed detent spring retaining bolts, then the detent springs, balls and detents.
7. Place fifth speed synchronizer in neutral position, then drive roll pin out from shift fork and remove fifth gear synchronizer hub, sleeve, bearing, gear and shift fork as an assembly.
8. Remove fifth gear from input shaft using gear puller tool No. J-35274, or equivalent.
9. Remove seven bearing retainer screws, then the bearing retainer and shims from input and output shafts.
10. Remove reverse idler shaft bolt.
11. Remove collar and thrust washer from output shaft using puller tool No. J-22888 and puller legs tool No. 22888-30, or equivalents.
12. Remove 14 bolts attaching transaxle case to clutch housing, then separate transaxle case from clutch housing.
13. Remove reverse idler gear and reverse idle shaft indexing pin.
14. Remove back-up lamp switch from transaxle case, then the reverse shift shaft snap ring.
15. Raise fifth gear to align detents and remove fifth and reverse gear shafts simultaneously.
16. Remove 1-2 shift fork roll pin with hammer and punch, then slide shaft upward to clear housing and lift fork and shaft from case.
17. Remove clevis pin, then the pin and reverse shift lever.
18. Remove input shaft, output shaft and 3-4 shift fork with shaft as an assembly, then the differential assembly.
19. Remove differential case from clutch housing.
20. Remove four reverse shift bracket bolts, three interlock pins and bracket.
21. Remove rear bearing outer races using race removal tool No. J-24256-A, or equivalent, then the output shaft race using race removal tool No. J-33370, or equivalent. Driver handle tool No. J-8092, or equivalent, may be used as a common driver for both applications.
22. Remove outer races for input shaft, output shaft and differential side bearings using puller tool No. J-26941 and slide hammer tool No. J-26941, or equivalents.
23. Remove input shaft seal.
24. Remove clutch shaft seal and fork assembly only if replacement is necessary as follows:
a. Remove outer clutch shaft seal, then the bushing using bushing remover tool No. J-37245, or equivalent, and a hammer. Drive bushing toward outside of clutch housing.
b. Remove clutch shaft, then the inner clutch shaft seal.
c. Remove inner clutch shaft needle bearing using bearing remover tool No. J-37158, or equivalent, by positioning puller legs under bearing and threading rod down to expand legs. Hold rod while tightening nut to remove bearing.
