REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Raise hood.
2. Negative battery cable.
3. Cross brace to strut towers:
a. Loosen bar assembly through-bolts.
b. Remove inboard strut nuts.
c. Remove brace assembly.
d. Re-install inboard strut nuts.
4. Air intake duct.
5. Cruise control cable at throttle body.
6. Shift control linkage.
^ Mounting bracket at transaxle.
^ Lever at manual shaft.
7. Wiring connectors at:
^ Park/neutral position switch.
^ Transaxle electrical connector.
^ Vehicle speed sensor.
8. Fuel pipe retainers.
9. Vacuum modulator hose at modulator.
10. Three top transaxle to engine bolts.
11. Install J 28467-A engine support fixture.

Important: "Load" the support fixture by tightening the wing-nuts several turns to relieve tension on the frame and mounts.

12. Turn steering wheel to full left position.

CAUTION: To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle at the opposite end from which components are being removed. This will reduce the possibility of the vehicle falling off of the hoist.

13. Raise vehicle and suitably support.
14. Both front tire and wheel assemblies.
15. Right and left front ball joint nuts.
16. Separate the right and left control arms from steering knuckle.
17. Right drive axle from transaxle only. Do not remove drive axle from hub/knuckle assembly.

Important: Carefully guide output shaft past lip seal. Do not allow shaft splines to contact any portion of lip seal surface, otherwise damage to the seal will occur.

18. Left drive axle.
^ Remove left drive axle from both the transaxle and the hub/knuckle assembly.
19. Support transaxle with jackstand, and adjust as needed throughout procedure.

20. Left front transaxle mount.

21. Torque strut bracket from transaxle.

22. Right transaxle mount to transaxle bolts.

23. Transaxle brace from engine bracket.
24. Stabilizer shaft link to control arm bolt.
25. Flywheel cover bolts and flywheel cover.
26. Flywheel to converter bolts.

Important: Mark flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly.

27. Bolts attaching rear frame member to front frame.
28. Front left frame-to-body attaching bolts.
29. Front frame to right frame member bolts.
30. Frame assembly by swinging aside and supporting with suitable stand.
31. Cooler pipes at transaxle.
32. Remaining lower transaxle to engine block bolts.

Important: One bolt is located between the transaxle case and the engine block and is installed in the opposite direction.

33. Lower transaxle assembly away from vehicle.

Important: Use care to avoid damaging right hand output shaft, shaft seal, hoses, lines and wiring.

INSTALL OR CONNECT
^ To complete installation, observe the following assembly tips and reverse the removal procedures.

Assembly Tips
^ Use care when installing right side drive axle into the transaxle case. The splined shaft can easily damage the seal.

Important:
^ Before installing right side drive axle, be sure to install tool J 37292-B axle seal protector.
^ Line up the flywheel to torque converter marks made at disassembly.
^ Torque converter to flywheel bolts should always be tightened twice. The final torque should be 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
^ Check adjustment of the shift cables. Readjust as needed.
^ After installing front wheel and tire assemblies, torque wheel nuts to specifications.
^ When installing cross brace to struts:
a. Place assembly on inboard strut studs.
b. Install strut stud nuts and torque to 24 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
c. Torque bar assembly through-bolts to 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
^ Check and adjust the fluid level as needed.
^ Road test and check for leaks.
^ When installing transaxle to engine block brace, tighten brace to engine bolts first and brace to transaxle case last to avoid pulling transaxle case out of line.
