Universal Theft Deterrent
The Universal Theft Deterrent (UTD) System (if equipped) is housed in the Body Control Module (BCM) and is comprised of the following components:^ Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter.
^ Security Indicator LED.
^ Theft Deterrent Shock Sensor.
Use of the Remote Control Door Lock Transmitters are the primary method of Arming and Disarming the UTD system. The Remote Control Door Lock Transmitter (with UA6) has four push-button. The push-button perform the following functions:
^ "LOCK" - Locks doors, arms UTD system.
^ "UNLOCK'-' - Unlocks doors, disarms UTD system.
^ "HATCH RELEASE" - (Car symbol) Opens Rear Compartment Lid.
^ "PANIC" (Horn symbol) Initiates the UTD alarm (Horn and Parking Lamps) in the "Panic Mode."
The Door Lock switches can also be used while exiting the vehicle. The BCM will receive the "Lock" or "Unlock" signals and am' or disarm the UTD system, along with the associated door locking function. Once armed, the UTD system will flash the Security Indicator LED. The LED. is located on top of the I/P upper trim panel to provide status of the system and to ward off potential intruders. The status of the alarm system can be determined by the output of the Security Indicator LED as described below:
^ Light blinking once a second Door is open, alarm system is not armed.
^ Light on steady - Alarm system is waiting for the doors to close before arming; Three second bulb test at ignition on, alarm will sound once the driver's door eight second delay finishes.
^ Light flashes briefly every two seconds - Alarm system is armed.
^ Light flashes twice every two seconds - Alarm system is armed and the shock sensor triggered a two minute alarm.
^ Light flashes three times every 2 seconds Alarm system is armed and there was an intrusion that sounded the alarm.
^ Light off Alarm system is off, disarmed, or a door is opened for more than 10 minutes.
The Theft Deterrent Shock Sensor is located near the spare tire in the hatch area.. Different levels of shock are required on the various body panels and windows to activate the sensor, depending on the material (plastic, steel or glass) and distance from the shock sensor. Two levels of alarms are available through the shock sensor:
^ Two horn blasts and light flashes for non-threatening blows to the vehicle.
^ A full two minute alarm for harder blows to the vehicle.
The red light on the shock sensor illuminates at shock levels that would cause the full (2 minute) alarm to sound The Shock Sensor is ignored by the UTD system during the following conditions:
^ Ignition on
^ Rear Compartment Lid open
^ Five seconds after the UTD system is armed
^ UTD disarmed
^ When customized to be ignored
Once armed, the UTD system will monitor the following to determine alarm setting/theft deterrent criteria.
^ Ignition Key Switch (PASS-Key-II)
^ Theft Deterrent Shock Sensor inputs
^ Front side door switches
^ Rear Compartment Lid Release switch
The UTD system provides vehicle security in conjunction with PASS-Key-II by controlling the following functions:
^ Fuel enable
^ Starter enable.
^ Audible alarm (Horns)
^ Visual alarm (Parking Lamps).
The fuel enable signal is provided by the Body Control Module (BCM) on CKT 229 to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). This signal must be present at the PCM so it can enable the Fuel Pump Relay. The Starter Enable Signal is provided on CKT 625 between the BCM and the Theft Deterrent Relay. When present, it will Energize the Theft Deterrent Relay. This will allow the Starter Solenoid to be energized when the Ignition Switch is set to START." The Audible Alarm signal is provided by the BCM on CKT 28 to the Horn Relay. When activated, the BCM will pulse a ground output to the Horn Relay coil, which sounds the horns on and off during the course of the verification, tamper or alarm cycle. The Visual Alarm signal is provided by the BCM on CKT 624 to the Park Lamp Relay. The BCM will also pulse a ground output to the Park Lamp Relay coil under the same conditions as the Audible Alarm.
