Cylinder Head Replacement - Left or Front
Removal ProcedureNotice: Refer to Tire Performance Criteria and Enssions Control Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Perform an engine compression and leak down test. Refer to Engine Compression Test and Cylinder Leakage Test.
2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
4. Drain the engine oil.
5. Lower the vehicle.
6. Remove the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper).
7. Remove the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
8. Remove the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement.
9. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement
10. Remove the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Right).
11. Remove the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
12. Remove the left (front) spark plug wires from the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Starting and Charging.
13. Remove the left (front) spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Starting and Charging.
14. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left Front).
15. Remove the left (front) cylinder head bolts.
16. Remove the left (front) cylinder head.
17. Disconnect the fuel line bracket at the left (front) cylinder head.
18. Remove the left (front) cylinder head gasket.
19. Clean the following areas:
^ The gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head, cylinder block, and intake manifolds.
^ The cylinder block bolt threads.
^ The cylinder head bolts.
Installation Procedure

- J 36660 Electronic Torque Angle Meter
Notice: Refer to Tire Performance Criteria and Enssions Control Notice in Service Precautions.
1. Install a new left (front) cylinder head gasket.
2. Install the left (front) cylinder head over the locator pins and over the gasket.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.
3. Tighten the left (front) cylinder head bolts (1-8) in sequence.
^ Tighten the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in sequence to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Use the J 36660 in order to turn the cylinder head bolts (1-8) in sequence an additional 90 degrees.
4. Connect the fuel line bracket at the left (front) cylinder head.
5. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement (Left Front).
6. Install the left (front) spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Starting and Charging.
7. Install the left (front) spark plug wires to the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Starting and Charging.
8. Install the oil level indicator tube. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement.
9. Install the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement (Right).
10. Install the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement.
11. Install the valve rocker arms and pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement
12. Install the lower intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Lower).
13. Install the upper intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement (Upper).
14. Fill the engine with new engine oil.
15. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System in Cooling System.
