Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Notice: Do not overfill the transmission. Overfilling will result in foaming, loss of fluid, and possible damage to the transmission.





1. Inspect the washers on the bolts if the following procedures must be done:
1.1. The case side cover removal
1.2. The oil pan removal
2. Install a new washer if the original washer is inverted.
3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
4. Place the drain pan under the transmission oil pan.
5. Remove the oil pan bolts from the following areas:
- The front
- The sides
6. Loosen the rear oil pan bolts.
7. Allow the fluid to drain.
8. Remove the remaining oil pan bolts.

Notice: Refer to Do Not Damage Oil Pan Sealing Surfaces Notice in Service Precautions.

9. Tap the oil pan with a rubber mallet or pry the oil pan loose with a screwdriver. Refer to Do Not Damage Oil Pan Sealing Surfaces Notice.
10. Remove the pan.
11. Remove the gasket.
12. Remove the oil filter.





13. Remove the following components for the Hydra-Matic 4T60:
13.1. The screen/filter
13.2. The lip ring seal pressed in the case, only if replacement is necessary.





14. Inspect the oil pan and the screen for the following foreign materials:
14.1. Metal particles
14.2. Clutch facing material
14.3. Rubber particles
14.4. Engine coolant
15. Determine the source of the contamination.
16. Correct the source of the contamination.
17. Inspect the pan flange for distortion.
18. Straighten the pan flange, if necessary.

Notice: If the case and oil flanges are NOT dry and free of any oil film, leakage may result.

19. Clean the following components with a solvent:
19.1. The case
19.2. The oil pan gasket surfaces
19.3. Metal particles
19.4. Clutch facing material
19.5. Rubber particles
19.6. Engine coolant
20. Air dry the components.
21. Inspect that all old gasket material is gone.
22. Clean the screen with a solvent.
23. Clean the oil pan with a solvent.
24. Blow-dry both components.


Installation Procedure





1. Install the new lip ring seal into the case for the Hydra-Matic 4T6E, if the seal is removed.
2. Install the new filter.





3. Use a new gasket and GM Thread Locker P/N 12345382 in order to install the oil pan.
- Tighten the bolts to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions

4. Lower the vehicle.
5. Fill the transaxle with the proper quantity of DEXRON(R) III
6. Place the gear selector in Park.
7. Start the engine.
8. Run the engine at slow idle.
9. Inspect the fluid level.
10. Correct the level as necessary.
11. Inspect the oil pan for leaks.
