Expansion Valve: Service and Repair

THERMAL EXPANSION VALVE REPLACEMENT

TOOLS REQUIRED
J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

REMOVAL PROCEDURE




1. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
2. Remove the left wiper arm linkage nuts. Reposition the left wiper arm linkage for access.
3. Reposition the heater hoses for clearance.
4. Remove the evaporator outlet line to TXV nut.
5. Disconnect the evaporator outlet and inlet line from the TXV.
6. Disconnect the evaporator outlet line from the evaporator inlet line.
7. Remove and discard the sealing washers.

IMPORTANT: Cap or tape the open A/C refrigerant lines immediately to prevent contamination of the refrigerant system.

8. Cap off the refrigerant lines.




9. Remove the TXV to evaporator bolts.
10. Remove the TXV from the evaporator core.
11. Remove and discard the sealing washers.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE




1. Remove the cap or tape from the evaporator core.
2. Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, carefully clean the sealing surface of the evaporator core and the TXV.
3. Lightly coat the new sealing washers with mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow any of the mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil on the sealing washers to enter the refrigerant system.

4. Carefully slide the new sealing washers onto the evaporator core until seated.




5. Install the TXV to the evaporator core.

NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Install the TXV to evaporator bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 3.2 N.m (28 lb in).




7. Remove the cap or tape from the A/C lines.
8. Using a lint-free clean, dry cloth, carefully clean the sealing surface of the A/C lines and the TXV.
9. Lightly coat the new sealing washers with mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT allow any of the mineral base 525 viscosity refrigerant oil on the sealing washers to enter the refrigerant system.

10. Carefully slide the sealing washers onto the A/C lines until seated.
11. Install the evaporator inlet line to the evaporator outlet line.
12. Install the evaporator outlet and inlet lines to the TXV.
13. Install the evaporator outlet line nut.

Tighten
Tighten the nut to 16 N.m (12 lb ft).

14. Reposition the heater hoses.
15. Install the left wiper arm linkage.
16. Install the left wiper arm linkage nuts.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 5 N.m (44 lb in).

17. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
18. Leak test the fittings of the component using J 39400-A.
