Engine Flywheel Cleaning and Inspection

Automatic Transmission

Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution (Safety Glasses Warning) .




1. Clean the automatic transmission flex plate in solvent.
2. Dry the flex plate with compressed air.

Important: Do not attempt to repair the welded areas that retain the ring gear to the flex plate. If any of the following conditions are found, install a new flex plate.


3. Inspect the flex plate for the following conditions:

* Damaged ring gear teeth (1).
* Elongations of the crankshaft or torque converter bolt holes (2).
* Stress cracks around the flex plate-to-crankshaft retaining bolt hole locations (3).
* Cracks between the pressing holes (4).
* Welded areas that retain the ring gear onto the flex plate for cracking.
