Muffler: Service and Repair




Exhaust Muffler Replacement (2.4L LE5)

Removal Procedure




1. Open the hood.
2. Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
3. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) electrical connector (3).
4. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).





Note: The HO2S uses a permanently attached pigtail and connector. This pigtail should not be removed from the sensor. Damage or removal of the pigtail or connector will affect proper operation of the sensor.

5. Remove the HO2S (2). Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Sensor 1 (Service and Repair).




6. Remove the catalytic converter to muffler nuts.




7. Have an assistant support the muffler assembly.
8. Separate the muffler insulators from the hangers.
9. With the aid of an assistant, remove the muffler assembly.

Installation Procedure




1. With the aid of an assistant, position the muffler assembly.
2. Install the muffler insulators onto the hangers.





Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

3. Install the catalytic converter to muffler nuts.

Tighten the nuts to 17 Nm (13 lb ft).




4. Install the HO2S (2). Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Sensor 1 (Service and Repair).
5. Lower the vehicle.




6. Connect the HO2S electrical connector (3).
7. Install the CPA retainer.
8. Close the hood.
