Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

Cylinder head can be removed with engine installed in vehicle.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove timing belt as previously described.
3. Remove camshaft housing.
4. Remove cylinder head attaching nuts, loosening in reverse order of tightening sequence, Fig. 18.
5. When installing cylinder head gasket, ensure ``TOP'' mark faces up and arrow faces front of engine.
6. Apply light coat of oil to cylinder head studs.
7. Torque cylinder head nuts to specifications in proper sequence, Fig. 18.
8. When tightening cylinder head nuts, ensure washers do not turn.
9. When installing camshaft housing gasket, ensure ``TOP'' mark faces up and camshaft oil bore is clear.
10. When installing camshaft housing, torque attaching bolts to 14 ft.lbs.
11. Lightly lubricate camshaft housing plugs and install by hand. If aluminum plugs are used, torque to 29 ft.lbs. and install new seals.
12. Install and adjust timing belt as previously described.
