Parking Brake System: Service and Repair

Typical View Parking Brake Assembly:

1. Disconnect the caliper frame assembly from the wheel carrier.

Retracting Parking Brake Shoes:

2. Turn parking brake adjuster nut to retract shoes.
3. Remove brake rotor retaining screws and remove rotor.
4. Remove hold down springs, adjuster and upper return spring for brake shoes.
5. Remove operating lever and remove parking brake shoes.
6. Before installation, lube adjuster, shaft for operating lever and sliding surfaces of parking brake shoes with a light coat of high temperature grease.

Operating Lever:

6 Assemble operating lever.

Mounting Return Springs And Shoes:

7. Mount long lower return spring on parking brake shoes, move in parking brake shoes and insert in operating lever.

Installing Adjuster:

8. Connect upper return spring, pull parking brake shoes apart and insert adjuster.

Installing Brake Shoe Hold Down Springs:

9. Center parking brake shoes, mount hold down springs.

NOTE: Make sure that hooks of springs engage correctly in land of brake backplate or trailing arm.

Recheck Installation Of Parking Brake Shoes:

10. Recheck installation of parking brake shoes, automatic slack control, return springs, springs and spreader lever, correcting if necessary.
11. Mount brake disc and brake caliper, adjust parking brake shoes and bleed brakes. Refer to ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES for correct parking brake adjustment.
