Recommended Sequence of Adjustment

NOTE: When it becomes necessary to adjust the drive pinion and ring gear, the following sequence is the most rational:

- Determine the total shim thickness "Stot." (S1 + S2 ) for the specified pre-load of the taper roller bearing/differential.
- Determine shim thickness "S3".
- Divide total shim thickness "Stot "into S1 and S2 so there is the specified amount of backlash between ring gear and gear drive pinion.
- This adjustment is intended to re-optimize smooth operation as it was determined on the special test stand during production.
- Absolute cleanliness during all assembly and measuring operations is essential for perfect results.

- The drive pinion and ring gear or gear set need only be readjusted if work on the axle drive involves the replacement of parts which have a direct influence on the setting. Refer to the table to avoid unnecessary adjustment.
