Oxygen Sensor: Service and Repair

Precautions
When replacing oxygen sensor, always use the following precautions:
^ Be sure threads are free of damage, burrs, and carbon deposits.
^ Be careful not to damage pigtail wires when removing or installing sensor.
^ Be sure threads are coated with high temperature anti-seize compound (carefully coat threads so as not to contaminate inside sensor surfaces Fig. 54.).
^ Install and tighten to specified torque (49-57Nm / 36-43ft.lbs.).
^ Make sure harness connection is clean and tight.

Oxygen Sensor Replacement
The sensor is located in the exhaust cross-over pipe just before the inlet to the turbocharger and is accessed from below.
- Disconnect oxygen sensor harness at the rear of the engine compartment behind the intake manifold.
- Raise and support vehicle.
- Pull the sensor harness down from it's connection in the engine compartment.
- Using the proper wrench or socket remove oxygen sensor, carful not to damage the harness if the sensor is to be removed.

- Coat threads of new sensor with anti-seize compound, using care not to get any in the sensor slots, then install sensor. Careful not to over twist the harness and damage it during installation.
- Reroute the harness back up to the back of the engine compartment.
- Lower the vehicle and reconnect the harness at the rear of the intake manifold.
