Crankcase upper and lower sections and balance shaft cover are machined together and must be replaced as a set. Ensure that code numbers match and install balance shaft covers so that codes are visible from above. When sealing upper and lower crankcase halves, apply thin coat of suitable locking compound in areas of oil intake and sealing surface in areas of flywheel. Torque crankcase connecting stud nuts in sequence, Fig. 10, as follows; M12 x 1.5 nuts in three steps to 14, 29 and 54 ft.lbs., M10 nuts in two steps to 14 and 36 ft.lbs., M6 nuts to 6 ft.lbs., and M8 nuts to 14 ft.lbs.
