Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Compressor Clutch: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Use a standard strap wrench to keep thrust plate from turning and undo mounting bolt.
2. Screw a M 8 bolt into the thrust plate threads until the thrust plate can be taken off by hand.
3. Take out spacers and remove circlip with a pair of standard circlip pliers. Pull off pulley manually.
4. Unscrew solenoid coil wire from compressor housing. Remove circlip. Take solenoid coil off the compressor housing.

Installation

1. Place solenoid coil into compressor housing. Lock pin must engage into the lock pin hole.

2. Fit circlips. The chamfered face of the circlip points upward (towards mounting bolt).
3. Tighten thrust plate mounting bolt. Tightening torque: 14 Nm

4. Use a feeler gauge set to check air gap between thrust plate and pulley.
Air gap: 0.5 mm ± 0.15

If the air gap is outside the limits, adjust air gap by inserting or removing spacers.
