Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Wheels: Testing and Inspection

Checking the radial and lateral runout

The measuring points for radial and lateral runout on the inside of the wheel are given in the following drawing (dimension "a").
Maximum permissible radial runout and lateral runout of the light alloy wheels = 0.7 mm.
Maximum permissible radial runout and lateral runout of the wheel with tire = 1.25 mm. Values less than 1.0 mm - better around 0.5 mm - are desirable.

Important: Straightening and welding work on light alloy wheels is not permissible.

Note Use a tire measuring gauge - e.g. V.A.G. 1435 - to measure wheels without tires and wheels with tires.
