Boxster (987) and Boxster S (987) with manual transmissions feature tension and idler pulleys made of plastic in order to reduce weight. This results in a weight reduction of approx. 1.1 lbs (0.5 kg). It has not been possible to implement this change on vehicles with Tiptronic, due to the different mass on the power output side of Tiptronic vehicles in comparison to vehicles with manual transmission, which would result in vibration and subsequent noise.

On the basis of the excellent service life with the belt drive, Porsche has extended the replacement interval from 48,000 miles (80,000 km) to 60,000 miles (90,000 km).
