Timing Chain Guide: Service and Repair

WM 1535IN Wear on components in timing drive mechanism

Information

Wear on timing chains, sprockets, tensioning and guide rails

- Absolute cleanliness is essential during removal and installation.

- Always lay removed parts on a clean surface and cover them.

- Coat new parts with new engine oil before installation.

1. No measurable wear values (such as chain elongation) are specified for the chain drive. Before removal, the engine should therefore be checked for noise from around the chain drive during operation.

If there is noise from around the chain drive, we recommend that you replace the individual components.
2. During disassembly, the individual parts (sprockets, timing chains, tensioning and guide rails) must be checked carefully for signs of wear, e.g. erosion on the sprockets, abrasion on the tensioning and guide rails.

Visible signs of wear are acceptable, but in the case of wear that can actually be felt, the affected components must always be replaced.
