Knock Sensor: Service and Repair


WM 287219 Removing and installing knock sensor

Preliminary work

1. Remove the thermostat housing for both front knock sensors (sensor for cylinders 1 and 2 as well as sensor for cylinders 5 and 6) -> 195519 Removing and installing housing for coolant regulator - section on "Removing" Service and Repair.
2. Remove the starter for both rear knock sensors (sensor for cylinders 3 and 4 as well as sensor for cylinders 7 and 8) -> 276019 Removing and installing starter - section on "Removing" 276019 Removing and Installing Starter.

1. Observe and note installation position of knock sensors.

2. Unscrew fastening screw -2- and remove knock sensor -1- from the crankcase.

Information

The tightening specifications for the basic engine are stored centrally. -> 1001IN Tightening torques, tightening sequences, assembly overviews [1][2]Specifications. Tightening torques and assembly instructions for other affected assemblies (e.g. chassis, electrics, transmission or body) or for peripheral engine equipment can be found in the corresponding documents.

- Clean contact surface of knock sensor with a cloth.

1. Install knock sensors -1-. Make sure that the knock sensors are aligned as shown in the illustration.

Strictly observe the specified tightening torque for the knock sensor screw. Align the housing and cable plug for the knock sensor in such a way that they are not touching. Otherwise, there is no guarantee that the knock sensor will work perfectly.

2. Tighten fastening screws -2- ().
3. Push on cable plug.

Subsequent work

1. Install the thermostat housing for both front knock sensors (sensor for cylinders 1 and 2 as well as sensor for cylinders 5 and 6) -> 195519 Removing and installing housing for coolant regulator - section on "Installing" Service and Repair.
2. Install the starter for both rear knock sensors (sensor for cylinders 3 and 4 as well as sensor for cylinders 7 and 8) -> 276019 Removing and installing starter - section on "Installing" 276019 Removing and Installing Starter.
