Water Pump: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and remove splash shield.
2. Remove pressure cap from expansion tank, drain cooling system and remove block drain plugs.
3. Raise and support vehicle, then remove right front wheel and inner fender panel.
4. Loosen adjusting nuts on drive belt tension rod, alternator adjuster bolt and alternator pivot bolt, then move alternator downward and remove serpentine drive belt.
5. Remove water pump mounting bolts, then remove pump and pulley assembly through fender panel opening.
6. Remove pulley from pump.
7. Install pulley on replacement pump and tighten bolts hand tight.
8. Position gasket on pump, install pump assembly through fender opening and tighten retaining bolts.
9. Install drive belt over pump pulley and tighten pulley bolts.
10. Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, noting the following:
a. Adjust drive belt tension to 140-160 lbs. for model less A/C. On models with A/C, tension new belt to 180-200 lbs. or used belt to 140-160 lbs.
b. Refill and bleed cooling system as outlined.
