Ignition Control Module: Testing and Inspection

Fig. 4 Advance curves for integral electronic ignition system.:

ALLIANCE & ENCORE W/1.4L (4-85)
Do not remove vacuum capsule from module. Do not short circuit high voltage current on module. Do not ground ignition coil high or low voltage current.
1. Connect tachometer and timing light to engine, disconnect and plug vacuum capsule vacuum hose, and attach externally regulated vacuum source to vacuum capsule.
2. Run engine until it reaches normal operating temperature.
3. Check initial ignition timing with engine at idle and no vacuum applied to capsule. Timing should be approximately 8° BTDC but may vary slightly depending on ignition and engine condition.
4. Increase engine speed to 2000 RPM and apply 1.5 in. Hg to vacuum capsule.
5. Observe timing degrees scale and turn advance control on ignition timing light until ignition timing has returned to idle speed specification. Degrees indicated in advance meter should be total degrees advance as specified, Fig. 4.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5, using 10 in. Hg, 19 in. Hg, and/or 21 in. Hg applied to vacuum capsule, and compare results to specifications, Fig. 4.
