Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

Valve Clearance: Adjustments

Fig. 14 Valve adjustment check.:

1. Rotate crankshaft to position camshaft in such a way that intake valve for cylinder No. 1 has just closed and the exhaust valve for cylinder No. 1 is about to open, Fig. 14, (cylinder No. 1 is next to flexplate/flywheel assembly).
2. Measure and record camshaft-to-tappet clearance for cylinder No. 4.
3. Continue positioning camshaft as outlined in left column of Fig. 14. Then check camshaft-to-tappet clearance as indicated in right column of Fig. 14.
4. Compare measurements to valve specifications. If clearances are excessive, the tappet pad should be changed. Tappet pads are available in sizes of 3.25 to 4.25 mm (0.1279 to 0.1673) in increments of 0.05 mm and 4.30 mm, 4.40 mm and 4.50 mm (0.1692 inch, 0.1732 inch and 0.1771 inch).

Fig. 15 Tappet pad replacement.:

5. Using tools Mot. 992 and 992-01, remove tappet pad, Fig. 15.
6. When installing tappet pad, locate slots (A), Fig. 15, at right angles to camshaft. Insert pad so size marking faces the tappet.
