Catalytic Converter: Description and Operation

Catalytic Converter:

Final filtering of the exhaust gasses is accomplished by a three way type catalytic converter. The catalytic converter is located between the engine and the muffler. The converter incorporates a ceramic material insert of honeycomb design. The walls are coated with platinum and rhodium.
If the fuel system maintains an optimum air fuel ratio, with oxidation of CO content and HC, the catalytic converter reduces the emission of NOx. The exhaust emitted by the car to the atmosphere will therefore consist mainly of CO2 and H2O.
