Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Exc. Turbo

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and starter motor cables.
2. Remove flywheel cover and the transmission dipstick on cars with manual transmissions.
3. Remove starter motor heat shield and rear starter motor mount, Fig. 1.
4. Remove front starter motor mounting bolts.
5. Position motor so that it will clear recess and remove from engine compartment.
6. Reverse procedure to install.




Turbo

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and starter motor wires.
2. Remove turbocharger suction pipe, preheater hose and flywheel cover.
3. Remove dipstick on vehicles with manual transmissions.
4. Remove brace between turbocharger and transmission.
5. Loosen oil return pipe on turbocharger to allow it to be positioned outward.
6. Remove starter motor heat shield and rear motor mounting, Fig. 1.
7. Remove front motor mounting bolts.
8. Tilt motor downward slightly and lift out forward while carefully bending turbocharger return pipe out of the way.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Install a new gasket between oil return pipe and connecting flange on turbocharger.
