Modification Parts & Repair Instructions

MODIFICATION PARTS

To do the modification on each car you will need two (2) nylon tie straps, 3/16 in. wide x 10 in. long. These can be obtained locally or order under P/N 79-71-880.

In a small number of cases L/F brake fluid pipe P/N 89-46-014 may be damaged and require replacement. Order VOR, if necessary.



REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS

1. Inspect the routing of the B+ cable from the alternator to the wire harness and subsequently to the starter motor.

The cable must be positioned so that it runs no closer than 3/4" (20 mm) to the left wheelhouse. Also, the B+ cable must be connected so as to be routed out of the correct outlet (see Version 1).

Two types of alternator B+ outlets were used during 1984 vehicle production (see Version 1 and 2). The drawings show the correct routing for both types.

If both of these are correct no further inspection or work is necessary.


2. If the cable routing is incorrect the B+ cable is routed too close to the inner wheelhouse and may chafe against the housing or the brake line. This may be due to either the B+ cable not being firmly secured to the radiator hose or the cable being run from the wrong outlet of the mounting for the B+ cable. If incorrect proceed as follows.



- Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

- Disconnect the B+ cable from the alternator and check the cable insulation for wear. If so wrap with electrical tape or cover with a short length of rubber hose.

- Inspect the brake line that runs along the left wheelhouse for visible wear from B+ cable contact. If damage is evident that may affect the strength of the tube, replace with a new brake line (P/N 89-46-014) and refer to the Recall Claim Form Procedure of this S.I. for labor allowance. (Operation #52221 includes time to replace brake line and bleed brake.)

- Route the B+ cable along the radiator hose and behind it as shown in the drawing.

- Reconnect the B+ cable to the alternator, positioned so that it runs through the upper outlet of the plastic mounting (Version 1). If Version 2, situate the B+ cable to best enable it to be routed upward, away from the wheel housing and brake line.

- Cable tie the B+ cable to the radiator hose as shown in the drawing so that the distance between the cable and the wheel housing is at least 3/4" 120 mm). Use cable ties (2 required), P/N 79-71-880. Position one cable tie about 120 mm from the coolant tank and one at the engine compartment wire harness.

- Connect the negative battery terminal.
