Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Starter Resistance Test

NOTE: On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Air Bag Systems Also refer to Service and Repair, Arming and Disarming.

1. Disconnect positive battery cable and connect 0-300 scale ammeter between disconnected lead and terminal post.
2. Connect a voltmeter between positive post on battery and starter relay terminal on starter solenoid.
3. Crank engine while observing readings on voltmeter and ammeter. A voltage reading exceeding 0.3 volts indicates a high resistance caused by loose circuit connections, faulty cable, burned starter relay or solenoid switch contacts. High current combined with slow cranking speed indicates a need for starter repair.
4. Reconnect positive battery lead.
