Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Air Conditioning

Air conditioning is activated by the A/C switch or from the ACC unit via Integrated Central Electronics (ICE) module pin 64.

The ICE module continuously monitors the coolant temperature. To reduce the load at high engine temperatures (and so protect the engine from overheating), the A/C compressor is switched off when engine temperature exceeds 126° C (259° F).

If the engine temperature is lower than 126° C (259° F), battery positive voltage is supplied from ICE module pin 11 to the engine control module via a pressure switch and anti-frost thermostat. When the conditions for A/C engagement prevail, the engine control module grounds the A/C relay.
