Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.
Manuals through 2025 now available!

Our trusted friends have launched a new website named LEMON, which has newer manuals. It also contains all the CHARM manuals.

LEMON is the spiritual successor to CHARM, I recommend you try it!

Electrically Heated Rear Window

1 Check that the fuses for the electrically heated rear window relay and the climate control unit or the heating/ventilation control panel are intact and live.
2 Plug in the Intelligent Saab Tester (ISAT) scan tool and select "READ FAULT CODES" from the menu. If any diagnostic trouble codes are present, continue in Trouble Code Tables.
3 Select "READ SWITCHES" from the menu and then "REAR WINDOW HEATER". Read the
ISAT scan tool display when the electrically heated rear window switch is activated.

Important: "READ SWITCHES" is only possible on cars with a manual ventilation fan since the ACC sends only a 100 ms pulse.

If the heated rear window does not work, check the wiring between the ACC or the heating/ventilation control panel and Integrated Central Electronics (ICE) module pin 66 for continuity/ shorting.
4 With the electrically heated rear window-activated, disconnect its contacts.
Take readings as follows:
- A 12 V supply should be present between one of the contacts and a good grounding point.
Check the grounding of the electrically heated rear window as follows:
- The resistance should be < 1 ohm between the other contact and a good grounding point.
5 If the readings taken in point 4 are not OK, connect a jumper lead between connector pins 30 and 87 of the relay holder for the electrically heated rear window.
If the electrically heated rear window now works, change the relay.
If it does not, check the wiring between relay connector pin 87 and the electrically heated rear window for continuity/shorting.
6 Check the electric heating element in the rear window.
