9208saturn01

NO.: 91-T-50

DATE: December, 1991

GROUP: Chassis

CORP NO.: 185008

SUBJECT: ANTI-LOCK Brake Indicator Lamp Flashes Intermittently and an ABS Code 15 is Retained in Memory (Replace Enable Relay)

MODELS

AFFECTED: All 1991 Saturns with Antilock Brakes

CONDITION: Customer may comment that occasionally the ANTI-LOCK brake indicator lamp flashes. When performing a diagnostic check, ABS Code 15 is stored in memory.

CAUSE: The switch contacts on the ABS enable relay (P/N 22555387) will occasionally stick closed. This causes ABS diagnostic code 15 to set and the ANTI-LOCK brake indicator lamp to flash.

NOTE: Antilock brake operation will not be affected when the ANTI-LOCK brake indicator lamp is flashing.

CORRECTIVE
ACTION: Replace the ABS enable relay with a new design enable relay

(P/N 12088594, stenciled on part) according to the following procedure. If the vehicle is already equipped with the new enable relay, refer to Antilock brake code 15 diagnostics in the "Brakes Service Manual."

PROCEDURE:

1. Locate the antilock brake enable relay taped into the instrument panel wiring harness above the PCM module carrier assembly (refer to Figure).

2. Remove tape and disconnect the relay from the connector.

3. Connect replacement relay to wiring harness connector.

4. Tape relay to wiring harness.

5. Clear diagnostic codes using a portable diagnostic tool (PDT) or service stall system (SSS).

6. Road test vehicle to verify that the complaint has been eliminated.
