SUBJECT: Manual Transaxle Requires High-Effort to Shift (Lubricate Cable Push Rod Ends) 1991 Saturns with MP2 or MP3 Manual Transaxle


CONDITION: Some owners of 1991 Saturns with manual transaxles may comment that it is difficult to shift into any gear. Normally 2nd and 4th gears are the most difficult.


CAUSE: This condition may be caused by insufficient lubrication on the shift cable, causing excessive drag or binding of the shift cable.


CORRECTIVE
ACTION: This condition can normally be corrected by lubricating the cable push rod ends at the shifter with a silicone lubricant (dielectric grease). Dielectric grease can be found at most auto parts stores and may also be called "Tune-Up" grease.





PROCEDURE:

1. Remove console from vehicle. Refer to "Console Removal" procedure located in the "Manual Transaxle In-Vehicle Service" section of the "Manual Transaxle Service Manual."

2. Apply a dielectric (silicone) grease to the cable push rod ends in the area shown in the illustration.


3. Verify that the transaxle shifts easily into 2nd and/or 4th gear. If lubrication of the cable rod ends does not correct the condition, check the routing of the cables from the shifter to the dash to make sure that the cable routing is as straight as possible, and cables are not crossed between the front of dash and transaxle housing. If the cables are correctly routed, replace the shift cables. Refer to "Shift/Selector Cable" removal and installation procedures located in the "Manual Transaxle In-Vehicle Service" section of the "Manual Transaxle Service Manual."

4. Replace the console. Refer to "Console Installation" procedure located in the "Manual Transaxle In-Vehicle Service" section of the "Manual Transaxle Service Manual."
