Valve Spring: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. On SOHC models, remove spark plugs, rocker cover and rocker arm assemblies.
3. On DOHC models, remove spark plugs, cam cover and camshaft.
4. On all models, install angle supports tool No. SA9127E or equivalent, then use four M8 X 25 mm bolts to mount supports to end rocker arm shaft threaded holes with support flange toward center of cylinder head, then torque to 10 ft. lbs. on SOHC models, or 7 ft. lbs. on DOHC models.
5. While sliding rods through support, install compressor lever arm assembly.
6. Install spark plug adapter tool SA9127E or equivalent, to each cylinder.
7. With piston at TDC, pressurize cylinder to 100 psi, Fig. 21.
8. Tap compressor lever with suitable plastic mallet while applying slight amount of pressure to breaker bar.
9. Position lever over valve spring, then use suitable 1/2 inch breaker bar to compress spring.
10. Remove valve spring cap retainers, then release spring tension.
11. Remove cap and spring.
12. Using tool No. SA9102E or equivalent, remove valve stem seal.
13. Reverse procedure to install.
